The Therapist Consultation Room: Rigidity vs Chaos and Mindfulness
It was another fantastic therapist peer consultation group yesterday led by Linda Graham, MFT. To be held in such emotional safety and security amongst this small group of women is an experience I am truly grateful for -
as well for the wealth of knowledge and insight that pours out of Linda, a woman passionate about the neuroscience of attachment.
We are still making our way through Being a Brainwise Therapist by Bonnie Badenoch, about how a clinician can apply these ideas into their practice.
Here are some nuggets of information mined from the group today:
- Presenting clients are typically either in a state of rigidity or chaos – or sometimes fluctuate between both.
- The client’s attachment style can be determined by which state(s) they operate in.
- Mindfulness helps clients to identify their constraints, widen their windows of tolerance and modulate the intensity of their affect.
- The ideas that brains and bodies resonate with each other can help people make sense of their lives and understand their prior experiences.
Here’s an additional quote from the book that I found interesting:
“…brain talk can offer us so much more than education, actually becoming a powerful form of contingent communication that also works to rewire nonconscious implicit processes.”
Next group meets Wednesday August 4th.
If any therapists who know something about this subject would like to share their information “nuggets,” all the better! Insights and links to additional resources are all welcome on the comment form below.
Lastly, check the “notify me of new comments” to be kept in the loop.

A “nugget” I love to use is that to be true to myself, I am fine the way I am and my value is just as much as anyone else in this world.
Act in a way that you are comfortable without causing harm against others to gain emotional security and learn to value your life and other lives. These are the learnings that I think gained by the members of the group who join the therapy. Great job for the leader.
