Couples Therapy Clients: Different Perceptions of the Same Events

What does a couples therapist do with couples who have vastly different perceptions of the same events?  I’m notNotes from a Therapist's Chair - The Therapy Counseling Blog talking one event – but countless high conflict events over a period of weeks and months.

And I’m not just talking different emotional experiences based on assumptions and other distorted thinking patterns – I’m talking vastly different accounts of the facts of the story - which both parties are passionately attached to and appear to truly believe.

Any ideas about this?
