Difference Between Therapy and Counseling?
The term “therapy” is short for “psychotherapy” so let’s start with that definition. According to one dictionary, “psychotherapy” means…”The treatment of mental and emotional disorders through the use of psychological techniques designed to encourage communication of conflicts and insight into problems, with the goal being relief of symptoms, changes in behavior leading to improved social and vocational functioning, and personality growth.” The word, “counseling,” means …”Advice or guidance, especially as solicited from a knowledgeable person.”
Traditionally, the distinction has been that “therapy” was the deeper, insight and awareness-oriented work. However, over the last few years many therapists have used the terms interchangeably. In addition, some people refer to “counseling” when referring to couples work and “therapy” when referring to individual work.
For me personally – I use “therapy” and “counseling” to mean essentially the same thing. However, other therapists might prefer to associate with one term or the other to describe what they do.
