4 Reasons to Consider Group Therapy
Group therapy often gets overlooked by people as a viable option for help for a number of issues. The reality is that group therapy can a great alternative to individual therapy (and sometimes couples counseling) for a
number of reasons:
1) Much Less Expensive: In the downturned economy we are living in, it can make great financial sense.
2) More Feedback: You have not only therapist or counselor’s input - but other group members who are experiencing some of the same situations.
3) Normalizing: When we see others going through what we are - it can make us feel less dysfunctional or as many people have said to me, “crazy.”
4) Bonding: When we experience therapy in a group setting, we have the potential to be vulnerable and see others be vulnerable as well. This can be a very safe, warm and connecting experience.
I personally haven’t run any groups in some time – but I’ve really enjoyed the group therapy work I’ve facilitated in the past. I believe the power of the therapy lies more with the “group” than with the therapist – though the therapist is responsible for guiding, maintaining a safe space and offering ideas.
