Book Review: A Wife’s Guide to In-Laws – How to Gain Your Husband’s Loyalty Without Killing His Parents by Jenna D. Barry

Jenna D. Barry offers an edgy, informational life line to wives who feel stuck in the middle of the man they love – and his parents.  Though not a therapist, Jenna speaks from the heart of experience and has also clearly done hermarriagebookwifesguidetoinlaws homework around how to improve (and ultimately perhaps not) these types of relationships.

Her wit and knowledge are skillfully woven together in a comprehensive guide to help evaluate the in-laws – and wive’s behavior, set and enforce boundaries (as challenging as this can be) and control anger that sometimes comes up.  She looks at tough issues such as in-laws involvement with grandkids and what comes up around elderly in-laws.

Jenna also speaks a bit to the husbands out there and encourages them to understand why his wife and his parents behave the way they do – and how he can help.  At the end of the book there are very useful worksheets for wifes and husbands to do around achieving compromises.

From a therapist’s perspective, I liked how she described specific frustrating scenarios that commonly occur for wives –  and how to set boundaries.  Boundary setting is the most important element when it comes to managing overly intrusive in-laws. Yet she also wisely warned of the possible negative consequences of trying to assert those boundaries – and how to deal with that.  The book is full of great advice about healthy communication skills and is punctuated by wonderful illustrations by Jenna herself.

A Wife’s Guide to In-Laws is a useful tool for wives needing help handling the most difficult of in-laws – and is also thoroughly entertaining.
