The Art of Forgiveness: The Key Element in Every Successful Relationship by Richard Nicastro, PhD

“Why do you need to practice forgiveness?  Because humans inevitably make mistakes (it’s anThe Art of Forgiveness: The Key Element in Every Successful Relationship inextricable part of our job descriptions), there will always be a need for forgiveness in relationships.  All people and therefore all relationships are inherently flawed – - imperfect.  We each have our own personality quirks, some amount of emotional baggage, and core tender-spots that linger from our childhood relationships and previous romantic relationships.  These emotional tender-spots can make us sensitive to feeling misunderstood, hurt, angry, shamed, or lonely.  Over the course of any intimate relationship, couples unintentionally poke at, step on, and agitate each other’s tender spots.”- from The Art of Forgiveness:  The Key Element in Every Successful Relationship by Richard Nicastro, PhD

As a therapist who does individual and couples therapy, I am keenly aware that the topic of “forgiveness” is an important one for people in their own journeys of personal growth - and in their relationships.  I’ve seen countless couples struggling with resentment over past transgressions where the ability to forgive each other (or themselves) is sadly deficient.  Without it, it’s very difficult to move forward and heal.

When I read this workbook, I found myself nodding, “yes!” throughout it and was struck by how helpful it could be for couples struggling with the issue of forgiveness.  Though it’s written to benefit couples, it also could benefit individuals struggling with this in their lives, perhaps being reflected in their other non-intimate relationships; friendships, families, work, etc – and even forgiveness within themselves.

The workbooks includes a comprehensive look at “forgiveness” including why it’s so hard for couples, childhood wounds that impact the relationship, what it looks like when forgiveness is lacking, blocks to forgiveness, the role of self acceptance and even a bit on healing from an affair.

Being a therapist with a strong focus on family of origin problems for people, Dr. Nicastro’s book particularly struck a chord with me.  I recommend this forgiveness workbook for couples (and individuals) who struggle with this issue and are interested in more deeply exploring and improving it.
