A relationship needs good communication to thrive like a plant needs water and without good communication tools, there can be numerous relationship problems. In fact, in my couples counseling, this is the single most common problem because of the simple fact that poor communication skills underlies so many other relationship issues. It is fundamental to emotional safety and a strong relationship foundation, two concepts I refer to a lot in my couples therapy work. A lot of the problems that occur in relationship could have been avoided with open and clear lines of communication.
In therapy, I teach couples how to communicate effectively by using such skills as active listening and "I feel" statements. So much of what causes the break in communication also stems from not really hearing each other or making assumptions about what the other is thinking or feeling. A lot of tools I use come from cognitive-behavioral therapy to challenge irrational thinking styles that often occurs between partners. If we decide to work together, we'll explore how you and your partner communicate and start to make adjustments by practicing in and outside of session.
